Aquaculture and Viticulture are two very important industries in New Zealand. If you have an interest in either of these subjects, studying in Nelson could give you the experience you need to qualify and get ahead in the industry by gaining practical hands-on experience.
What is aquaculture?
Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish and even plants. The Diploma in Aquaculture (Fish Farming and Fishery Management) at NMIT is a qualification that’s designed to meet the increasing need for qualified and professional people in aquaculture and fresh water fisheries management.
The Diploma involves a combination of study and work-based training, with industry placements in each semester. Students train at Cawthron Aquaculture Park in Glenduan, 10 minutes from Nelson City in a $6 million upgraded training facility. Graduates will be ready for employment as fisheries operators, researchers or technicians on a pathway to supervisory and management roles.

What is viticulture?
Viticulture is the science, production and study of grapes. NMIT offers the Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production, as a graduate you may find employment as an Assistant Vineyard Manager, Laboratory Technician, Vineyard Supervisor, Cellar Hand or Cellar Manager, or there are various options for you to continue your studies in viticulture in the form of a degree.
The Marlborough region is the leader of New Zealand’s wine industry and produces 75% of the country’s grape harvest, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to gain on-the-job experience at local wineries and vineyards through work placements and part-time employment while studying. The NMIT Marlborough campus offers top quality wine facilities, including an on-site vineyard, winery and a modern, well-equipped teaching laboratory facility situated within the new Marlborough Wine Research Centre - established with support from local and national wine and viticulture industries.
