He came, he saw … and he came back for more. Mark Bielby enjoyed his first year at TPP so much that he returned for a second year to complete the Diploma in Outdoor Instruction and Guiding.
‘The certificate year was great fun; I absolutely loved it. And coming this far, from the UK, I soon decided it would be better to get a more advanced qualification. The diploma is more in-depth, more challenging, more interesting – and I’m sure it will open up more opportunities.’
As well as the compulsory papers, Mark has chosen to do four elective papers: rock climbing, mountaineering, sea kayaking and rafting. ‘I want to make the most of my time here and figure I should aim high and get an enhanced qualification.’
He likes the way the programme is organised, with a good balance between classroom and outdoor activity. ‘While we’re all quite outdoorsy people, it’s clear the topics we cover in the classroom – such as ecology, geography, meteorology, history and sustainability – are really valuable and really necessary for what we do.’
Sharing a passion for the outdoors is what the DOIG is all about and Mark is looking forward to the opportunity to apply his skills in the outdoor education or adventure tourism industries. Wherever he goes, he knows he’ll have a qualification that shows he’s got what it takes: strong practical skills, plus the know-how to deliver a satisfying and rewarding client experience. Mark’s adventure is just beginning.
