Originally from Germany, teacher Sebastian Grewe believes in the value of a lifelong learning. His planned working holiday in New Zealand morphed into an opportunity to further his education and diversify his skills when he decided to enrol in TPP’s Diploma in Outdoor Instruction and Guiding.
‘I researched online and found different places offering outdoor education courses and then a friend told me about TPP …’ and everything fell into place. He loves the location – ‘the West Coast is just stunning. The combination of sea, lots of rivers, mountains and climbing possibilities made this the first choice for me’ –and likes how the different electives within the programme are organised and the way the tutors share their skills and experience, keeping everyone motivated to succeed.
Sebastian lives in TPP’s student accommodation, Tai Poutini Village. ‘It’s clean and well equipped, perhaps a bit chaotic sometimes, but it’s fun. Living in the hostel has helped me improve my English and it’s been a good way to meet people. The other students are friendly and helpful and we often take off on spontaneous trips in our free time.’
Doing the diploma has opened up new opportunities for Sebastian and after he graduates he’d like to work as a rafting guide. However, he does plan to return to teaching one day – and when he does he’ll probably be one of the coolest, most inspiring teachers around.
