This is Australia’s largest state, covering a third of the continent, yet it only has around two million inhabitants. Most live in the buzzing, easy-going city of Perth, the nearby port of Fremantle and along the coast. Western Australia’s size and considerable isolation from the east coast means it has a character all its own, which has traditionally proved popular with the British and Irish – there are large ex-pat communities here. The south has amazing beaches and the Margaret River wine-growing region, in the north you can visit the Kimberley, one of the world’s last great wilderness areas, and the World Heritage listed Bungle-Bungles.
